Blooming Tradition: The Pintaflores Festival Queen 2024 Competition

A Celebration of Culture

The Pintaflores Festival, celebrated annually in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, is a vibrant tribute to the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of the region. Held every November, this festival is a colorful blend of merrymaking, thanksgiving, and artistic expression, showcasing the community’s resilience and unity. The festival’s name combines the Spanish words “pinta” (tattoos) and “flores” (flowers), symbolizing the deep-rooted traditions of floral adornments and body art that define this celebration.

The Pintaflores Festival is steeped in legend, revolving around Princess Nabingka, who sailed from Cebu to the lush valleys of San Carlos City. Upon her arrival, she faced adversity but was celebrated by the locals through vibrant floral tattoos and dances, a tradition that continues today. The festival features street dancing competitions where participants don elaborate costumes adorned with flowers and intricate body art, narrating stories of hope and resilience. This year, I had the incredible honor of serving as one of the judges for the Pintaflores Festival Queen 2024 competition. Witnessing the passion and creativity of local schools as they showcased their talents was genuinely exhilarating. Each performance was a testament to the hard work and dedication of the students, making my role as a judge both rewarding and enjoyable.
