The Unveiling of the Iconic ‘MassKara Queen’ Statue: A Celebration of Bacolod’s Culture

I recently had the incredible opportunity to attend a press conference hosted by Megaworld, where they revealed the design of the stunning ‘MassKara Queen’ statue. Set to be crafted by renowned Spanish sculptor Ginés Serrén-Pagan, this 16-foot tall masterpiece will be installed atop The Kingsford at The Upper East township in Bacolod City. It promises to be a tribute to our vibrant culture and identity as Bacoleños.

As I sat among fellow media representatives, my excitement grew when I learned about the artistic vision behind the MassKara Queen. Ginés Serrén-Pagan has created over 3,800 sculptures, including pieces displayed at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Knowing that such an acclaimed artist is honoring our beloved festival filled me with pride. When the design was unveiled, I was captivated by the image of the MassKara queen—adorned in exquisite finery and mid-dance with a radiant smile. Her right arm is raised triumphantly while holding a colorful MassKara mask in her left hand, perfectly embodying the joy and spirit of our world-famous festival.

What took my breath away was learning about the statue’s future location atop The Kingsford. Facing an expansive plaza framed against the hotel’s all-glass facade, it is set to become a visual centerpiece for locals and tourists. As Avinash Menon, cluster general manager for Visayas at Megaworld Hotels & Resorts, spoke passionately about the statue’s significance, I could feel the excitement in the room.“Historically, the MassKara Queen is perhaps the most iconic symbol of Bacolod City’s MassKara Festival,” he said. Hearing him articulate how this statue would honor our unique identity made me proud to be part of this community.
