The sudden loss of electricity can be incredibly disruptive, Whether during a crucial work meeting or while enjoying a family gathering. However, recent developments from Negros Electric and Power Corp. (Negros Power) have opened my eyes to a promising solution: the installation of Automatic Circuit Reclosers.

The Game-Changer: Understanding Automatic Circuit Reclosers

So, what exactly are these devices? In simple terms, Automatic Circuit Reclosers are advanced technology designed to detect electrical faults—like those caused by tree branches or debris hitting power lines. When a fault occurs, the device temporarily removes the power to prevent damage and automatically attempts to restore it after a brief pause. If the problem persists, it keeps the power off, significantly reducing the time we typically spend waiting for manual repairs. This technology is vital because nearly 98% of power interruptions are due to these momentary issues. Without this innovative solution, repair crews would need to locate and fix problems manually, which can take up to an hour in rural areas and 15-20 minutes in urban settings. Introducing these reclosers means that many of us may not even notice when a temporary fault occurs.

What’s exciting is that Negros Power is not venturing into this alone. Their sister company in Iloilo has already seen remarkable success with similar devices. By minimizing major outages and speeding up restoration times, they have set a precedent that we can expect to follow here in Negros. Negros Power has committed to installing 40 of these reclosers, with eight already delivered and operational. The company strategically targets feeders that have experienced the most outages since August 1, 2024. For instance, Talisay Feeder 3 spans approximately 141 kilometers and has been divided into three sections. If one section experiences a fault, only about 2,000 customers will be affected instead of the entire feeder’s 8,500.

Imagine this: if there’s an issue in one section of Talisay Feeder 3, only those in that area will experience an outage. The other sections will remain powered up and running smoothly. This sectionalization minimizes inconvenience and makes it easier for repair teams to identify and resolve issues quickly. The same logic applies to Murcia Feeder 3, which serves around 15,000 customers across 236 kilometers. With two reclosers already installed and plans for a third by October 25, we can anticipate fewer large-scale outages and faster recovery times for everyone involved.
