Resilience in Action: Negros Power's Infrastructure Upgrade

Resilience in Action: My Experience with Negros Power’s Proactive Maintenance Initiative

Introduction

I had the opportunity to witness firsthand the dedication and hard work of Negros Electric and Power Corporation (Negros Power) as they undertook a significant proactive maintenance initiative. The goal? To minimize power outages caused by aging infrastructure in our community. As someone who has experienced the frustrations of frequent power interruptions, I was eager to see how this initiative would unfold.

The Importance of Proactive Maintenance

Negros Power decided to replace 132 sets of suspension insulators on 48 structures along a critical 3-kilometer stretch of the Bacolod-Silay 69KV sub-transmission line. This line dates back to 1979 and is crucial in connecting our local substations to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) substation in Bacolod City. I learned that these aging insulators were not just an inconvenience; they posed a significant risk for outages that affected many families and businesses in our area.

A Challenging Task

The maintenance work was no small feat. The line crews faced numerous challenges as they navigated through sugarcane plantations in the haciendas of Talisay and Silay cities. Watching them work tirelessly under the sun, I sincerely appreciated their commitment to stabilizing our power supply. They replaced corroded and damaged porcelain insulators with brand-new polymer insulators designed to withstand high voltages and stormy weather. This upgrade was essential for improving the reliability of our power distribution.

Leadership Commitment

During this initiative, I had the chance to hear from Roel Castro, President and CEO of Negros Power. He emphasized how crucial this maintenance was in addressing ongoing issues with frequent outages. Castro mentioned, “While this preventive maintenance is a necessary immediate solution, our long-term plan is to upgrade all the insulators of the 30-kilometer sub-transmission line and to relocate these lines along main roads.” His vision for making maintenance more accessible resonated with me; it showed a commitment to fixing immediate problems and ensuring sustainable solutions for the future.

Addressing Past Challenges

In just four months of operation, Negros Power had recorded nearly ten incidents of line faults and wire downs involving this high-voltage line, primarily due to faulty insulators. Knowing that this proactive maintenance initiative aimed at significantly reducing these occurrences gave me hope. Seeing a company taking concrete steps to improve our electrical infrastructure felt reassuring.

Conclusion: A Brighter Future Ahead

As I reflected on my experience witnessing Negros Power’s proactive maintenance efforts, I felt a renewed sense of optimism for our community’s future. This initiative was more than just a technical upgrade; it represented a commitment to enhancing our quality of life by ensuring reliable power distribution. With leaders like Roel Castro at the helm and dedicated crews working tirelessly, I believe we are on the path toward a brighter, more resilient future. Ultimately, it’s not just about electricity; it’s about the connections we build within our community and the assurance that we can rely on each other—especially when challenges arise.
