Eating is one of the fun things to do. But what happens when you eat food that is low in fiber or that take days to digest? You get constipated.

Definition and Symptoms

Constipation, a pesky digestive problem, is common to all. It is characterized by a reduced bowel movement, which makes it difficult for people experiencing it to get rid of their solid body waste. In other words, the stool. Aside from this, they may also experience hard and dry, sometimes marble-like feces. They may also feel pain or discomfort during a bowel movement, lose appetite when eating, or have a bloated tummy. Blood may also be seen in stools when things get really hard. You may get a bit anxious, but there are treatments for constipation.

Causes

While food may be the primary reason, there are a lot of other factors that make bowel movement difficult as follows:

  • Inactivity or lack of physical activities
  • Changes in daily activities
  • Overuse of laxative
  • Side effects from medications you take
  • Consuming a lot of dairy products such as butter and milk
  • Resisting the urge to stool
  • Eating food with low or no fiber at all
  • Dehydration
  • Stress
  • Changes in food intake

Constipation and Home Remedies

There are natural remedies available at home to cure constipation. Even better, these can easily be accessed at home or in your backyard. They often do not have adverse side effects, unlike when you take synthetic pills from the counter. More importantly, they are cheap and healthy. You can include most of these remedies in your daily diet.

1. Water

Lack of fluid in your body may cause Dehydration. When this happens, the distribution of water in your body will lack, which makes it hard, even for your digestive system, to add fluid to your stool. This makes your body’s solid dirt dry and hard. You must drink more water than your habit to compensate for that loss. It will help your intestines soften the pesky feces inside your body.

In my opinion, it’s not the mistake of the team leader, no one can tell what will happen during your community work in the mountainous and REMOTE community in Candoni, it’s an unexpected situation. but as a team leader, what you can do is to give him/her a possible remedy to ease the pain he/she feels right now. based on the symptoms, which are dizziness and drowsiness, give your subordinate the possible remedies that are available in your location. but if the symptoms persist, your last option would be, to take your subordinate to a nearest hospital or call a medical specialist.

As a team leader, this is very disturbing in mind that one of my members is suffering some illness especially during our team building in a remote area. With this current situation that it’s impossible to abort the mission, the best thing I can do is to let him have a rest and I need to seek help in the nearest villagers or official if there’s available health facilities that could possible help my member. As a team leader, the time is crucial and it seems that the condition of my member will be in a critical state. I will ask the other members their opinion and if they have a better solution in this situation. Since we are in a team I need to consult my members also some possible and better ideas and suggestions.
In some point I can say that I made a mistake to take him to the mission because on the first hand before we go as a team leader it’s my responsibility to check and monitor the health condition of my members to see if they are fit to undergo especially in this kind of activities where physical wellness is needed. Then the best possible solution that I can have is to continue with the mission and that member who is sick may take a rest or maybe and seek help to the nearest village for traditional or some other remedy and he not will join the said activity for the mean time because his health is much more important and I can’t risk anymore because it looks so serious and its emergency cases already. Also I will encourage my other member if they can call emergencies hotline to respond immediately for checkup and appropriate medicine to be prescribed to him.

If a member loves his job, it’s not wrong to take him to do some community work even in a mountainous area because sickness attacks anytime, anywhere without warning.

As a team leader of this member who felt dizzy and drowsy, I would let him rest, and give him a massage until he fell asleep. I would ask help from other members to boil water and let him drink coffee made of black and red rice and black corn which I always put in my bag wherever I travel. As a team leader I knew the foods that triggered his allergy, so I would avoid preparing food that is not good for him. I would give him nuts and other food that are beneficial to his health. We would eat with him so that he would like to eat too. Eating little food would help him gradually if taken regularly. In this way, he would feel better.

As a leader and to have an expedition of such should have been planned well, not only preparation for the activities but also preparing your personnel for it. Lay out all possible scenarios that might happen during the trip and community work, checking your subordinates’ condition and how prepared they are considering the location of the said community.

Having this complication in the remote area could have been avoided or intervene ,considering that the work could not be abandoned or your teammate to be sent home, the best option is to send someone able enough to do a trip to fetch the medicine for constipation or aloe vera, whichever is more accessible, inorder relieve your teammate of his complications as soon as possible and not severely compromise the community work.

Being able to plan well, prepare for any situation and having a presence of mind during critical situations are some of the characteristics that a good leader should have. The plans may not always play out well, but a leader should still be able to make crucial decisions even in difficult circumstances.

  5. Having community work or outreach in remote areas is adventurous and exciting but quite risk-taking especially if you don’t have enough resources and travel tools in case of an emergency.
Based on the stated case, our team is designated to undergo community work at the remote areas of Candoni, Negros Occidental of which I am also designated as a team leader. An issue about one of our members having difficulties in his condition of being constipated is considered to join and participate as part of the team. This issue arose during the 3rd day of work where he could no longer execute normally.
The appropriate thing to do is to seek help from the nearby villagers or homeowners in that particular area. That is also a meaningful way to notify the municipal authorities to give an immediate response to this occurrence by providing safety and means of medication. The said mission might be compromised but it will continue as my teammate undergoes the process of recovery. In my point of view, I will be held liable but will not blame him for what happened instead find an adequate solution and remedy to overcome his health problem.

In this situation where the available remedies has been exhausted, it’s better to be safe than to risk the health of the person. I would call in a medical evacuation, assign two members of the team to accompany the sick team member to the nearest medical facility. In this kind of activity contingency plans are in place, especially for medical emergencies, so I would say that it was not a mistake to take him on the community work. He is part of the team and he has every right to take part in the endeavor. Though this will affect the work to be done, the team still has time to adjust to the situation and still accomplish the work set for two weeks.

  7. Mary Rose S. Tubid

Dr. Marianito “Jojo” Vito’s article regarding the Home Remedies for Constipation- Natural Ways (fabasianlifestyle.com) stated the different convenient solutions for delayed bowel movement. It is a condition where a person has a compressed body waste that is difficult to pass. Those natural ways can be applied while staying in Candoni, Negros Occidental, as some remedies are readily available. However, staying there for almost two weeks with a member who has a delicate constipation condition and allergies to those foods is challenging. It is difficult to decide because I cannot abort the case study activity or send my member alone at home. It may be a mistake choosing him to be part of our activity, but we cannot change the situation by realizing it. Therefore, as a leader, I will think of the best way to make our mission successful without compromising the health and safety of anyone.

These are the possible ways to resolve the issue while we are conducting the teamwork case study.
First, we will think of other remedies to at least lessen his condition. Based on my own experience, the additional natural ways we can still try are drinking salted water, a mixture of lemon, honey, and lukewarm water, doing physical activities or exercises, reflexology massage, and establishing a routine. These ways can help to relieve the suffering of my member. Moreover, adding salt to the water will help repair digestive movement. I did not include eating papaya in case that person has an allergy to it. Aside from that, daily physical activities or exercises to boost digestion will also include in our routine. With these, all of us can be fit and still fight the challenges and finish the project.

Second, we may also ask help from the leaders of the Candonian’s about their natural remedies. I believe they are ready with it because they are far from the city and health facilities. Their herbal and other home remedies can help ease the pain and make the patient back to work.

The third is having collaboration for suggestions of other solutions about the matter. There can be a proper delegation of the task to maximize our time. It can be alternately watching and monitoring the condition of the said member while the project is ongoing. In this case, everyone will still have the chance to participate in the said study and work with the team effectively while caring for our team members.

On the other hand, if there is still no progress, we have to call for help on sending the patient to the hospital. Taking care of the patient and working on the project will be done simultaneously. In this way, we can attain the objectives of the study successfully.

Given the situation, we may rattle, yet we have to keep ourselves calm to make an effective plan. It is better to consider our members’ health conditions before conducting an activity, especially in mountainous and remote areas. Additionally, it may result in more problems if neglected. All of these show that being a leader is not easy. One should be responsible, learn to delegate the task effectively, know how to listen, and decide for the good of everyone. The experience we have maybe challenging yet fulfilling.

Leadership plays a vital role in a team regardless of the number of members. The ability to lead and delegate responsibilities and tasks is one of the best characteristics leaders should possess. In addition, great leaders listen and know their members.

As a team leader, my members are my responsibilities, particularly with a delicate health condition. Since we cannot abort the mission, seeking help from the elders and leaders in that area is a great help. They knew their place very well and lived using natural remedies during emergency cases since clinics or hospitals are hard to reach. They might offer it to him to ease his pains and suffering in the meantime. I should let him rest and observe his condition or let someone watch over him while we work. With this, our mission will not be compromised nor stopped. While doing it, I should send someone to call help and pick him up to bring to the nearest hospital as soon as help arrived.

Yes, I made a mistake in taking him to join, considering that I already knew his health condition. Because of my negligence, I put him at risk and danger, even if he insisted. The consequences should be faced and managed, which also affect the whole team. For me, the mission or work needs to be fulfilled and carried out. I am not saying that I do not care for him, for he is my member. Looking for remedies and seeking help while waiting for the rescue to take him to the hospital is the only thing we can do. We cannot change his condition, but we can help him to best we can in such a predicament.

Serving people through community work, particularly in the mountainous and remote areas, is exhausting yet fulfilling. The happiness it brought and the realizations in life are cannot be bought but will treasure for the rest of our lives. It is not comparing our life with them but instilling the value of contentment of what we have by living simple and far away from temptations.

Its not a mistake to take someone to join a team to work in a mountainous and remote area in Candoni Negros Occidental. But for member with medical conditions it’s something to look forward into and considered not to join him in an area where medical attention in case of emergency is not accessible.
Yes, it’s a mistake to take someone with a medical condition in a project where the community is mountainous and remote. It is something to put into consideration and required transportation incase of an emergency. Safety should be in utmost priority. As a team leader it is your responsibility to prioritize your safety as well as the safety of others.
The article provided only a remedy, to some extent it may not be a guarantee of cure or fast recovery. In my own opinion, starting in a condition that he could no longer excrete and feeling dizzy and drowsy is an alarming sign of immediate response that may require immediate action.
The remedies mentioned in an article should only be taken into consideration on your way home as you travel back into safety. The mission should be aborted in some instances. How can a team work excellently when at the back of their mind somebody needs immediate attention? If there is a will there is always a way. Ask help from the community and take all possible steps, a solution to bring your team into safety/ safety is a priority, you can have all the study, research project, opportunity as long as we live.
